Friends, we are exactly one month into the new year, how scary is that? For those of you who do not follow medieval liturgical calendars with such passion as I do, tomorrow is the festival of Candlemas, which marks the end of the Christmas season, and as such, I’ve had my Christmas decorations up all this month, the fairy lights softly blinking away, and I’m almost sad to see them go. Part of me entertained the notion of simply going in for a 12 month Christmas, especially if we spend the rest of this year in and out of lockdown, as I suspect we will, but that seems somehow sad, to be trying to celebrate something whilst the rest of the world is oblivious.
Ah, before we get too maudlin, before I start bemoaning the fact that I should have been at Heathrow airport this morning, stepping aboard a plane to fly half way across the world, I thought I’d highlight what you may or may not have missed at the Esther Greenwood School for Girls this month:
For Epiphany, we celebrated the coming of our dark master, Ea, Lord of the Deeps, a hideous underwater presence lurking off the coast of a New England fishing village.
For the Feast of the Ass, we extolled the mule that Mary rode in on with cries of Up! Sir Ass, and sing.
Considering the commentary of Philip K. Dick, in mid-January, we laid out our criticisms of long dead Confederate general, Robert E. Lee.
Whilst at the end of the month, we considered the sadness of the passing of Sara Teasdale all those many years ago.
For those of you who have been very kindly supporting the school financially during this tough time, we also posted an additional story, naked and profane, relating to our feelings regarding tyranny and the inability to process images of horror separately from those of mundanity.
The eagle-eyed amongst you may also have noticed that one of our girls took a liking to the new DJ Muggs the Black Goat release in a short piece on the Jericho Vilar curated media aggregation hub, Blusterhouse.
And so we come to the end of this missive, all that remains for me to say is to wish you a happy Candlemas for tomorrow. Should you be inclined to fritter away more money, we still have a number of copies of All Cats are Beautiful and various other fanzines and tote bags at our etsy, and you can currently get 15% off on our beautifully designed Jericho collaboration shirts over at threadless, which we are all sure will become mandatory picks for the summer season, whenever it gets here.
Enjoy the next month, friends, and thank you once again for all your support!
